Ruling on DNA samples in drug cases upheld

The Court of Appeal yesterday upheld a Court of First Instance ruling that it was lawful for police to take DNA samples from suspects in drugs cases. Tsoi Man-hung and Lo Cheuk-him were convicted of possessing dangerous drugs last year. The pair contended police only had powers to take DNA samples from people convicted of a serious arrestable offence. They were granted a judicial review, but lost the case.
