Call for aspiring jockeys

Youngsters who are keen about riding have the chance to build a career in horse racing, thanks to a scheme run by the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).

Anyone aged 15 or above who has a passion for horse riding is welcome to join the recruitment exercise for racing trainees. Applications close on August 4.

The 36-week programme includes riding training, stable management, horse handling, work safety, English, physical education, computer training and related lessons.

Silver Wong Lai-ngan, 18, was a participant last year.

'It's a very professional and challenging course,' he said. 'The scheme requires the same from boys and girls and is physically demanding. We need to work in the stables after class. Each trainee needs to take care of two horses.'

Upon completion of the course, outstanding students will become apprentices and receive further training in Hong Kong and overseas. A year later, they could be taking part in local racing events.

In addition to this scheme, the HKJC will launch a talent identification programme for junior secondary students in October.

Participants will receive basic training in riding and horse care.
