Full Circle

MOCA China Until August 6

Eric Haze's artistic career has come full circle. The 46-year-old painter started out as a gallery artist before becoming a pioneer graffiti rebel in the 1980s, and then launching his own street-wear label the following decade.

Now with his first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, he is ready to return to his artistic roots.

'I've earned my freedom by working hard and making money out of the clothing business, but my heart isn't in it any more,' says Haze. 'The best way is to stop thinking so much about brands and go back to just doing art.' Full Circle features Haze's latest signature style works, which include charcoal, pastels and large-scale prints on canvas. The repetitions and letter forms are to convey the aesthetics of abstract shapes; blending elements of graffiti and fine art.

Using mostly black and white hand-painted letters, lines, stars and arrows, Haze's approach is bold and full of raw emotion.

Unlike his previous shows, this one features more freestyle and organic pieces.

'For the first time in my life, I have learned to allow my art to just happen without having too many fixed ideas,' he says.

Also being exhibited is a set of three paintings of the letter 'S' that demonstrate the powerful imagery of his simple lines using a minimum of colours.

Haze's graffiti signature 'SE3' is a reminder of the artist's fascination with the 'S' shape.

'The S shape is combined in so many letters. It's based on the number 8 or the infinity sign - the perfect double circle. [In this work] the letter E is one half of the S and the 3 is the other half,' says Haze.

'I start the S with a circle and end it with another. It's like a reflection in the mirror.'

Haze recently decided to move his life and business back to New York from Los Angeles after working on the West Coast for more than 10 years.

'I don't know what's waiting for me in New York but I trust my instincts,' he says.

'There's no standing still. If you don't move forward you start moving backwards.'

Haze believes he has struck a happy balance between his business and his growing identity as an artist.

Full Circle - a look at what he has explored in the commercial world - has proven an invaluable step in the development of Haze's unique style.

'I was in the middle of a storm, finally a perfect wave came along and I had to be ready to ride it,' he says.
