UPDATED : Thursday, 31 July, 2008, 12:00am

Born: June 1, 1987 in Zhanjiang, Guangdong

Entry: 3m springboard individual

Credentials: Winner of 2008 World Cup, world number one

Why he'll win: Because he can outscore his rivals on technically difficult dives. With his good looks and outgoing personality, He is potentially the new face of China's diving juggernaut. All he is lacking is a major title, and he's perfectly positioned to win the biggest of them all. Qin Kai and Alexandre Despatie have fought it out at the past two world championships, but at the test event in February He stole the show, his extra level of difficulty leaving his opponents floundering. He can do dives no-one else is capable of - his challenge at the Water Cube is to do it consistently. 'If he keeps doing what he can through the six rounds in the final, I don't think anybody can beat him,' says Canadian team director Mitch Geller.

Who can stop him: Qin Kai (China), Alexandre Despatie (Canada), Yahel Castillo (Mexico)

Final: Tuesday 19th
