Regina Ip takes flak over Article 23 role

Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee, out to win Hong Kong Island in the Legislative Council elections, fielded flak at an election forum yesterday on Commercial Radio.

Ten members of the Democratic Party also marched yesterday from Chater Garden to Central Government Offices in support of an abolition of the levy on domestic helpers.

Hong Kong suspended the HK$9,600 levy that employers pay on their helpers' contracts for two years from Friday to ease inflation.

The march comes as the Philippine consulate braces itself for a flood of domestic workers seeking help today.

Mrs Ip was asked to direct questions at a randomly picked candidate, Tsang Kin-shing, a district councillor from the League of Social Democrats, at the radio forum. But Mr Tsang asked Mrs Ip to apologise over her role in the controversial Article 23 security bill, proposed during her watch as security chief.

Mrs Ip said she had apologised in her recently published book, which had sold 5,000 copies.

Cheung Kwok-kwan of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong came up short on environmental issues when questioned by the Civic Party's Audrey Eu Yuet-mee.

'You keep talking about the Blue Sky action launched by the government. But do you know its new slogan? Do you know why the government has stopped talking about Blue Sky?' Ms Eu demanded.

Mr Cheung ignored her and insisted the government should consider all parties when introducing a ban on idling vehicle engines.
