19 tourists hurt in three-vehicle crash

A delivery truck collided head-on in Aberdeen with a bus carrying mainland sightseers and a second truck rammed the bus from behind, leaving 19 of the visitors - five of them children - with minor injuries and bringing the group's tour of the city to a premature end.

The bus was taking about 30 tourists from Ocean Park to Repulse Bay when the accident occurred in the mid-afternoon in Island Road near the Deep Water Bay villa of former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa.

Initial investigations showed that an Aberdeen-bound truck ran out of control, veered into the opposite lane and hit the bus head-on, police said. The driver of the second truck braked too late to avoid ramming the bus, they said.

The driver of the Aberdeen-bound truck and one of his three passengers were trapped and had to be freed by firemen. His two other passengers were injured.

The injured tourists were bandaged at the scene. They and the four from the truck were taken by ambulance either to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam or Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai.

Last night two Hong Kong men aged 23 and 25 were in serious condition. The other casualties were either in stable condition or had already been discharged after treatment.

Earlier, a driver lost control of a delivery van, which veered into the opposite side of Tai Po Road near Kam Shan Country Park, Cheung Sha Wan, and collided head-on with a Kowloon-bound truck.

The van was spun around and rolled back into the New Territories-bound lanes, where it collided with a car.

The driver of the van, his woman passenger and the truck driver were trapped and had to be freed by firemen. Last night the woman, 40, was in critical condition in Prince of Wales Hospital and the two men, aged 42 and 49, were in stable condition.

Traffic was disrupted for about an hour until the three vehicles were towed away for examination.
