Birthday girl Yip eyes perfect present

Yip Pui-yin celebrated her 21st birthday on her arrival in Beijing yesterday, and she hopes the special feeling lasts through her Olympic debut.

The 2006 Asian Games silver medallist will meet Tracey Hallem of Great Britain in the opening round of the women's singles on Saturday.

'My birthday wish is to do well in Beijing,' said Yip, one of Hong Kong's fastest-rising athletes. 'But I won't put too much pressure on myself. Playing in the Olympics is already an honour and I will go out and enjoy the experience.'

Yip received a bouquet from Hong Kong media when she arrived at Beijing airport's new terminal three.

'I was surprised to get such a warm reception,' said the youngster. 'I was a bit worried last night as the trip might be delayed because of the typhoon but luckily we could go as scheduled. I just can't wait.'

Yip (pictured) said she was excited by the atmosphere on her arrival in the Olympic city.

'Everywhere you can feel the Games are coming,' she said. 'On my way to Beijing, I was greeted by many people who kept sending me best wishes for the Games.'

And Yip dived straight into her first training session late in the evening. 'I do not want to waste any time,' she said.

While Yip was full of excitement, compatriot Wang Chen, one of Hong Kong's medal hopefuls, was taking everything in her stride.

'Everything looks fine,' said Wang, who reached the quarter-finals in the singles at Athens four years ago, but has a great chance to improve on that after a series of impressive recent performances.

'I am in good form and I want to do well in Beijing,' she said.

Wang received a bye in the opening round and will meet Eva Sladekova of Slovakia on Sunday.
