Wetland resort plan

A developer has submitted its plans to build a resort on part of an ecologically rich wetland in Tai Po, triggering objections from environment group WWF. Sun Hung Kai Properties wants to build a 130-room resort, reportedly in conjunction with spa resort operator Banyan Tree, at Sham Chung. The site includes 40 per cent of the wetland which the developer suggests zoning for uses including ecotourism. WWF senior conservation officer Alan Leung Sze-lun said Sham Chung was a habitat for the Hong Kong paradise fish, a valuable wetland species. A Sun Hung Kai spokesman said an advisory committee would ensure mangroves and streams were well conserved.
