Student jailed for attack on tourist

Note:  Pang Sheung-ho's conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal on March 13, 2009.  The court found there had been a material irregularity at his trial.

A University of Hong Kong student was jailed for 15 months for punching a female French tourist after a row over the use of her camera during a day out at Bride's Pool, leaving her with a black eye and skull laceration. The tourist, 21, met Pang Sheung-ho, 25, at a bus stop when she was on her way to the waterfall in Plover Cove Country Park in June 2006, and he talked her into letting him join her. District Court Deputy Judge John Glass rejected Pang's claims that he was suffering psychological problems and said a deterrent punishment was necessary.
