Top tips: clear skin

Gary Chung Yuk-wa, makeup stylist for Guerlain, shares his tips for ensuring clear skin:

'I think a lot of people have neglected the importance of exfoliating because a normal cleanser is not enough to wash off the dead cells left on top of your skin. To solve the problem, you don't even need to apply a scrub cream. All you need is a natural sea sponge which usually comes in a yellowy colour.

'Don't buy synthetic ones. Soak it in water to soften it, swirl it around gently together with the cleanser so that it forms a foam on your skin. Rub your skin and nose with the sponge. It is an effective way to get rid of blackheads. This polishing method will give your skin a fresh, transparent and clean look. It is inexpensive and environmentally friendly too.

'As for makeup tips, I would advise beginners to use tinted moisturisers for a more natural appearance instead of foundation. It is easy to use and even if you've purchased a slightly wrong colour compared to your natural skin colour, it won't show much.

'In summer some people use a moisturiser first, then a makeup base and sunblock afterwards before applying powder.

'Using so many layers can block your pores but a tinted moisturiser already includes moisturiser and foundation, and some are UV protective. Not only do you save money, you can use fewer products and the effect is natural.

'The steps are simple: clean your face first, then apply the toner and the tinted moisturiser. If it is a bit greasy for you, add some powder to finish.

'Also, pick the right tinted moisturiser. If you have oily skin, use an oil-free one and if you have dry skin, use the one with a moisturising formula.'
