China's men's table tennis team warned their mission was only half complete after thrashing Germany 3-0 in a one-sided final last night.
Comprising world No1 Wang Hao, No2 Ma Lin and No4 Wang Liqin, the Chinese clinched the title without dropping a match in all five encounters - from the group stage to the title decider.
The victory made it four golds for the day for China - the others coming in gymnastics (two) and trampolining - and took the hosts to 39 golds, against 22 for the US.
China coach Liu Guoliang said they now had their sights on the singles competition.
'The team title is a must win for us because it is for the first time the event is being held in the Olympic Games,' he said. 'But when they celebrated their victory at the end of the match, I told them there is another mission to be won which is even more challenging.'
Liu was invited onto the medal podium by his players to celebrate what was also his second wedding anniversary.
