Students get to grips with design

Sixty secondary school students from 11 Hong Kong schools experienced the different aspects of design together with 30 students from the mainland.

The design camp, jointly organised by the Hong Kong Design Centre and Shantou University's Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, ran from August 3 to August 16.

The camp organisers prepared a variety of activities to teach students about popular types of design, such as 2-D, 3-D and video design.

Trips to art museums and printing factories were arranged, and students were encouraged to talk to each other about their ideas, thus learning the importance of discussion in design.

Jin Daiqiang, dean of Shantou University's Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, was pleased with how well the students complemented each other.

'Hong Kong students and mainland students each have their own characteristics, and all the students benefited from these differences. The students from Shantou are more curious, while the students from Hong Kong are a little shy,' he said.

'But in Hong Kong, students are exposed early on to all kinds of ideas and concepts, so they are flexible and can adjust easily to new environments.'

Before taking part in the camp, Ng Kwan-ho, a Form Four student from Hong Kong, had no idea what design was.

The camp taught him how to organise his ideas and thoughts, and express them through his work.

'In the past, when people talked about design, I thought they meant fashion design or interior design. But now I know design is more than that. Design helps to change lives and solve problems.'

At the end of the two-week camp, students held an exhibition of more than 100 products and artworks.

Each student also created a 'visual diary' to share their experiences and memories of the camp with the public.
