What's in it? Eugenol

What is it? A clear to pale yellow oily liquid extracted from the essential oils of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and bay leaves.

Other names it goes by Allylguaiacol, caryophyllic acid, eugenic acid, 1-allyl-4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzene.

What's it used in? Fragrances, moisturisers, hair colourants, cleansers, sunscreens, medicines.

What does it do? Its spicy aroma makes it suitable as a fragrance and flavouring.

Any controversy? There are cancer, neurotoxicity and allergy concerns.
