Kurumba Maldives

The first private resort built in the Maldives, in 1972, the Kurumba Maldives is the perfect place to unwind and spend lazy days in the sun. It is a place for everyone from honeymooners, retirees and families with newborns to those who just want to relax. The resort is a 10-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport, but this also means you are greeted early in the morning by the drone of the odd small seaplane heading out to islands further afield.

The resort has a picturesque beach with crystal clear waters lapping onto soft white sand that spans the entire island, which itself can be easily explored in a leisurely 20 to 30-minute stroll. The beach is protected by breakwaters which keep the waters calm.

It is advisable to bring your own snorkelling gear as there are colourful corals and a multitude of fish, stingrays and even small sharks.

The resort offers breakfast and dinner board options or bookings that include three meals a day. The dinner buffet at the Vihamana Restaurant changes nightly and there are discounts available if you want to try other restaurants at the resort. After dinner take a romantic stroll under the stars or hit the beach bar for some live entertainment.

Renovated in 2004, the resort's rooms are immaculate and fully equipped (they even have outdoor showers). Besides watersports, there are other recreational facilities such as the tennis courts, a gymnasium, a spa retreat and various excursions including indulging in a champagne sunset cruise.
