Bernie Ecclestone has never been much of a fence-sitter. Developments this week reveal him to be more of a fence jumper. In fact, if it were to be made an Olympic event, he would be favourite at the London Games in 2012.
You will not be surprised to hear that his volte face expediency relates to Max Mosley, the head of motor-racing's governing body, the FIA.
The two have been friends for years and yet in the early summer Ecclestone was joining the chorus of those in the sport calling for Mosley's head after the News of the World exposed his dealings with prostitutes.
Ecclestone called his position untenable, a meeting between the two was cancelled and a battle seemed to be brewing between the two camps over the future running of the sport.
If a week is a long time in politics, then half a season is an eternity in Formula One. Ecclestone apparently this week said he saw no reason for Mosley to resign. This admittedly is a little after Mosley had already won that battle without his old mate's help.
But Ecclestone will welcome Mosley back to the F1 paddock with open arms in a couple of weeks in Monza.
