Prizes up for grabs in initiative to nurture arts development
Forget West Kowloon and all the hardware the government wants to start an arts hub with. What we really need are more artists. It seems to us they are the integral software to run programmes and stimulate creativity.
To that end, the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards might do more for the arts than any West Kowloon infrastructure project. Applications and nominations for this year's prizes are now open if you wish to put forward artists, creative groups or organisations you think have made significant contributions or furthered the development of the local cultural scene.
The numerous prizes are categorised into honorary award, award for best artist, award for young artist, award for arts education, award for arts promotion and award for arts sponsorship. Young artist is defined as those under 30.
Besides a trophy, young artist winners will receive a cash award of HK$22,000 for further studies or for their arts projects. Some prizes are also split among various art forms and will have more than one winner.
For specific details of each prize, check out their website at www.hkadc.org.hk/hkada/2008. Application brief and entry forms can also be obtained from the Arts Development Council's office at 14/F, East Warwick House, Taikoo Place, 979 King's Road. Or contact them at 28201067.
The deadline is October 27 and the award presentation will be held in the middle of next year.
