Singers wow UK crowd
The choir of Diocesan Girls' Junior School won the top prize in an international music competition in July.
The 60 budding singers, comprising Primary Four and Five students, came out on top in the Junior Children's Choir section of the renowned Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod held in Wales, in the United Kingdom.
The week-long festival of song and dance attracted participants from more than 50 countries who competed in different categories, including chamber choirs, vocal solos and choreographed folk dance.
The local group beat seven teams to claim the top honour in the prestigious event.
Dressed in traditional Chinese costumes, the students delivered two wonderful renditions - an English song, Butterflies and Moths, and a Chinese number, The Maiden is Born to Sing - that kept the audience and adjudicators enthralled. The judging panel praised the youngsters for their 'fantastic English diction' and 'superb vocal technique'.
The festival organisers were so impressed by the performance of the Hong Kong girls that they were invited to showcase their talents in the ballroom of a local hotel after the competition.
Christina Chiang Chan Hung-mui, the school's choir coach and music teacher, attributed the students' clear and precise English pronunciation to their frequent practice. 'Our school has a strong emphasis on English education. They have plenty of opportunities to speak English,' said Mrs Chiang.
