Wang dives into gold medal drama
It was meant to be a joke, but it landed stage veteran Lisa Wang Ming-chuen in hot water. Wang (near left) who hosted an Olympic extravaganza for China gold medallists, has been derided by viewers for rude remarks she made on the show.
During the live television broadcast, Wang invited the China diving team on stage to celebrate their victory, after they swept an amazing seven golds out of the eight diving categories last month. When one of the team members, Wang Feng (far left), took too long getting out of his seat, Wang said to him loudly: 'Hurry up, we are doing a live show.' She then went on to suggest that diver Guo Jingjing (centre) get married so that next time her successor and teammate Wu Minxia would have a chance to try for a gold medal.
A number of complaints were sent to TVB and more than 400 people expressed their anger on the internet, saying she was rude and disrespectful to the Chinese medallists.
In a public appearance this week, Wang explained to reporters that she had been concerned about the amount of air time. She added that she was not at all interested whether or not Guo would marry, and was only following the script.
'It was only a joke and what others had to say about it was entirely out of my control,' she said.
Wang, 61, known as 'Big Sister' in Hong Kong's entertainment industry, is a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and chairwoman of the Chinese Artists Association.
