Officer gets suspended sentence

A police constable was handed a suspended one-year sentence in Eastern Court yesterday after pleading guilty to loan-sharking activities and dealing with illegal proceeds. The court heard that Chan Wai-wing, 38, lent a woman HK$100,000, which he claimed was obtained from a loan shark syndicate in September 2005, at an interest rate of 481 per cent. Chan later obtained another loan of HK$100,000 for her, at an interest rate of 570 per cent.

Blaze forces evacuation

Two elderly residents were sent to hospital after a blaze in a Wong Tai Sin public housing estate. The pair were among 70 residents who were evacuated from Suet Fung House, Fung Tak Estate, at 1.30pm. No one was inside the 21st-floor flat where the fire started. Firemen doused the flames by 1.45pm. A short-circuit was suspected.

Inmate expels drug packets

An inmate discharged 14 packets of suspected heroin in Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre, three days after he was admitted on Friday on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs. The 36-year-old man had been held in an isolation cell under close observation because police believed he was smuggling illegal drugs inside his body.

Teenager hit by truck

A 19-year-old man was in critical condition last night after being thrown three metres when hit by a truck while crossing King's Road in North Point at about 1.45pm. Police said he was taken conscious to Queen Mary Hospital. The 31-year-old driver passed a breathalyser test and was not arrested.

Attackers follow victim onto bus

Police are looking for two attackers who followed a 44-year-old man onto a minibus in Argyle Street, Mong Kok, and assaulted him at about 5am. The victim was treated for minor facial injuries at Kwong Wah Hospital and discharged. The attackers are thought to be aged between 20 and 30.

Man injured by delivery van

A 41-year-old man suffered arm and leg injuries when a delivery van reversed into him at the Kwu Tung market in Kwu Tung Road, Lok Ma Chau, at about 8.30am. He was treated at North District Hospital.

Falling bottle injures pedestrian

A 28-year-old pedestrian was injured by flying glass when a bottle fell from Lee Shing House, Lee On Estate, Ma On Shan, and shattered on the pavement beside him at midnight on Sunday.
