Take time for the Paralympic Games

The moment the Olympic flame was extinguished, it felt like life went back to normal. People's attention was diverted from the mainland.

But there is another major event in Beijing: the Paralympic Games. Although this is a huge event, it's difficult to find the media attention or enthusiastic support witnessed during the Olympics.

But the Paralympic athletes deserve as much attention and encouragement as their Olympic counterparts, if not more. We should be as eager to catch a glimpse of these athletes competing as we were in the Olympics.

I hope the Paralympic champions are given as much publicity as the Olympic winners. After all, they've had to overcome much more to get where they are.

From the Editor

Thank you, Ka-ka, for your very sensitive letter. In fact, the equestrian section of the Paralympic Games is also being held in Hong Kong. I do hope some of you have a chance to see these wonderful athletes in action first hand. If you do, write in and tell us of your experience.

Sadly it is doubtful the Paralympians will be given the same attention as the Olympic winners. Their victories are seldom tied to high-priced advertising campaigns.

However, we as Hongkongers can hold our heads up high because we have a good track record in the Paralympics. At the last Paralympic Games, which was held in Athens, Hongkongers won 28 medals. Eleven of those were gold.

China topped the medal chart with a whopping 63 gold medals. So there is a lot to watch and to cheer about in this week's action.
