Oscar Pistorius sprints to victory

Oscar Pistorius opened his much-hyped gold medal campaign with victory in the 100 metres sprint final of the T44 class at the 'Birds' Nest'. The South African double amputee (pictured) covered the distance in persistent drizzle in 11.17 seconds, three-tenths of a second quicker than Jerome Singleton of the US. The 27-year-old sprinter, who came close to qualifying for the Olympics and had set his sights on a world record, came in one-tenth of a second slower than his form in the qualifying round.
