The Editor's Note

The Austrian-born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is famous for the realist philosophy of his early years. His aphorism 'Whereof one cannot speak, one must remain silent,' at the end of his groundbreaking Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus tells us that statements without the precision of logic have no value. In other words a sentence that uses terms such as 'gorgeous' or 'sexy' is, quite literally, meaningless because it does not have the characteristics of a mathematical formula. Wittgenstein, who died in 1951, would have a tough time if he were reincarnated as a fashion designer. In the world of Gucci and Gabbana everything is subjective and nothing has the same sterile beauty of a quadratic equation. This is especially true in men's fashion where designers who try to innovate are often met with derision. We guys may enjoy the slapstick energy of Jean-Paul Gaultier or the punk impressionism of Vivienne Westwood but, when we reach for our credit cards, it's usually for Dior or Zegna. In men's fashion the appeal of classical styles has always been strong and, this season, it seems more robust than ever. With the return of the dandy, the rebirth of the suit and a more masculine profile popping up on the runways, convention has triumphed again. In this men's fashion edition of Style magazine we explore these issues with some cracking features and a world-class lineup of fashion photographers. If you dress with Style you can't go wrong.
