Top designer Rashid adds a little verve to Veuve Clicquot sparkle

It's the second year in a row that champagne-maker Veuve Clicquot has invited well-known product designer Karim Rashid to make something unique. Last year, he did a pink S-shaped loveseat, and this time he's created the Globalight, a curvy carrier that keeps a bottle of bubbly (pink, of course) cold while illuminating it in a soft halo of light. It looks beautiful, but seems destined to sit on six local collectors' mantles, because that's how many pieces are available here.

A pool-side party was held on Wednesday at the Island Shangri-La - complete with a synchronised swimming team and girls in orbs on the water for entertainment - for the pink-wearing Rashid, who loves a good design challenge.

'I get bored easily,' the Egyptian-Canadian confessed. 'I'm working on 110 projects at the moment. I'm trained in industrial design, but I do everything. I was going to study architecture, but it's too time-consuming. Fashion is the fastest. You can draw something and then it's done. But at least with a building, it lasts. I mean, I worked on a phone for 21/2years and their shelf life is, like, four months.'

With his Veuve Clicquot Globalight, the production time was significantly less, but it still took about eight months to get right. There's a cool local connection. It was made by Hong Kong company Traxon. According to creative director Malte Fromm, they were the only people who could get the result right for Rashid.
