Fairview roadblock 'needs approval'
A plan by the developer of Fairview Park to install a barrier to block trucks using a road within the Yuen Long housing estate seems to have become entangled in red tape.
Transport authorities, while acknowledging the road is private, asked the company first to consult district councils and the transport trade, and to seek approval from various government departments.
The move is the latest in a long-standing battle by Fairview Park residents to bar heavy trucks from using their private road - Fairview Park Boulevard - as a short cut between the border and New Territories container depots. The fight intensified after a boy was killed by a truck on the road in February last year.
A subsequent court ruling said that as owner, the developer could do whatever it liked with the road.
Fairview Park Property Management published a notice in newspapers yesterday, accusing trucks of abusing the private road and announcing gates would be installed.
In response, the Transport Department yesterday said the developer should prepare and submit drawings of the gate it intended to install to relevant government departments and police for approval and comment because the project would 'involve construction or erection of structures and facilities'.
