Thumbs up for CUHK

Liz Heron

Chinese University is planning further improvements to its programmes, information and support for students after receiving a glowing audit report from the Quality Assurance Council.

The report commended the Sha Tin university for its commitment to assuring and enhancing the quality of taught programmes, its bilingual policy and the level of academic support and pastoral care for students.

The audit, which is the first to be carried out on a Hong Kong university, looked at an action plan CUHK adopted in December that includes a review of all undergraduate majors and measures to bring them under one 'integrated framework'.

The report endorsed many aspects of the action plan, including the development of online learning and student services, a switch from elected to appointed deans and introduction of an 'outcome-based' approach to curriculum design.

It also recommended that CUHK develops a university-wide e-learning strategy, clarifies the roles of its various academic and pastoral support agencies and considers bringing in standardised course outlines. Pro-vice chancellor Professor Kenneth Young said: 'The report is an endorsement of the quality of teaching and learning and the quality assurance system at Chinese University.

'The commendations are about important points of substance and we are taking note of the affirmations and recommendations ... most of which are in line with what we have already planned.' He said CUHK would complete a review of the major programmes within about a year and create a new e-learning platform.
