Shanghai dairy giant apologises

Shanghai dairy giant Guangming has apologised for the melamine contamination of its products and offered compensation to those who have fallen ill.

In a statement carried by Shanghai media yesterday, the company vowed to take several steps to manage the crisis and said compensation would be paid according to government standards, but gave no further details.

'Guangming Dairy expresses deep regret for the unease the concerned products brought to consumers. Moreover, the company wants to bear full responsibility,' the statement said. The company could not be reached for further comment.

Guangming was not included on the blacklist of 22 companies with tainted infant milk powder, but another round of nationwide tests on dairy goods released late on Thursday included tainted products from its Beijing and Wuhan subsidiaries.

Six out of 93 Guangming samples tested positive for melamine, with concentrations ranging from 0.6mg to 8.6mg per kilogram, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. The products included yogurt and a beverage. No problems were apparently found in products from Shanghai, where the company is based.

The company vowed to take a number of measures to reassure consumers. It would recall any products found to be contaminated and halt production of the affected lines at its Beijing and Wuhan plants.

Guangming said it had requested testing on all of its products by national-level and local agencies and would publicly announce the results.

It vowed strict management over raw milk and additives, including testing every batch of products. The company would reject ingredients that failed to meet standards.

The company did not give the source of the milk for the tainted products.
