World Cup hopes end for HK pair

Alex Jenkins

Hong Kong saw their chances of qualifying for November's Omega-Mission Hills World Cup evaporate yesterday after David Freeman and Derek Fung finished in a share of seventh place at the Fortis International Challenge.

Needing to finish in the top three to earn a berth in the US$5.5 million event, the duo carded a two-under-par 70 in the last day foursomes to finish four shots adrift of Italy who clinched the final qualifying spot on 14-under-par. South Korea, who won the tournament with a 20-under-par total, and the Philippines, who placed second, also qualified.

'We played well and only let ourselves down on one day,' said Freeman in reference to the pair's disastrous 78 in the second round foursomes at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club.

'We could have easily shot a lot lower today, but overall we're going to take a lot of positives out of the week.'

The pair will now turn their attentions to the remaining events on the Asian Tour including the UBS Hong Kong Open.

'That's going to be a huge week for us, as it is for all Hong Kong golfers' said Fung. 'I've been a little rusty recently but I'm more comfortable after this event.'

Freeman added: 'The key now is to take this form out on Tour.'
