Derby showdowns dominate the European football arena this weekend, from Liverpool to Milan to Barcelona.

And two of those derbies provide a couple of bets to consider. Top of the list is Inter Milan, whose new manager Jose Mourinho goes into his first derby at the San Siro against AC Milan.

In a city famed for fashion and models, Mourinho has turned a few heads already with outspoken comments aimed at Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri and Catania chief executive Pietro Lo Monaco, and his refusal to comment at all following Wednesday's home win over Lecce.

Yet there is no arguing with Inter's strong start under Mourinho, recording three wins and a draw in four Serie A matches and an away win in their Champions League opener at Panathinaikos. Mourinho's record in big matches in England was excellent, with 10 wins and just two defeats in 19 big-four clashes in the league. Having taken over the best squad in Italy, he has every chance of establishing a similarly strong hold in Serie A.

Milan, by contrast, had a slow start with defeats in their first two league games and they appear some way short of Inter's consistently high standards.

With only two defeats in 40 away league games since the start of the 2006/07 season - admittedly one was against Milan in May - Inter rate a solid chance on the handicap. Liverpool is this year's European Capital of Culture, yet nothing stirs the city's soul like the Merseyside derby, and tonight's clash promises to be no different with Liverpool among the early front-runners in the Premier League and Everton not far behind after a good run of results on the road.
