Your chance to clean up beaches and make them beautiful again

Sunny Tse

Marine pollution has always been a severe problem in Hong Kong. Now there is a chance for everyone to do something about it.

The Ocean Conservancy's marine cleanup campaign International Costal Cleanup (ICC) is being held worldwide until November 2.

Schools, individuals or companies interested in social responsibility are welcome to join the campaign.

The schools with the highest number of participants in a single cleanup will win the Best School Participation Awards and receive prizes.

The campaign not only urges people to remove trash and debris from beaches and waterways, but also to trace pollution to its source.

The data collected will be forwarded to policy makers and other stakeholders in the hopes of changing the behaviour of polluters.

According to the latest report on marine pollution by the Green Council, which is co-ordinating Hong Kong's campaign, the most common solid waste items found in coastal areas are styrofoam boxes, plastic, glass beverage bottles, cigarette ends and candles. The Green Council hopes the environmental protection campaign will encourage the public to be responsible beach-goers and raise awareness of marine pollution in the business sector.

The council aims to invite all stakeholders to share its data. It hopes the information will provide a clearer picture of the pollution problem and help authorities find appropriate methods to keep our beautiful coasts sparkling clean. For more details, visit: www.greencouncil.org/ICC/icc_eng.htm
