Fiji selectors call on Serevi magic

STAR fly-half Waisale Serevi has been made captain of the Fijian national sevens side.

Serevi, who in January did not follow with a provisional agreement to sign professional forms with an Australian rugby league team, is one of two survivors from last year's Hong Kong Sevens squad.

He will be joined by forward Sakeasi Vonolagi, with newcomers making up the rest of the squad.

They were named in a squad to compete at next week's Fiji International Sevens.

But a Fiji Rugby Union spokesman said the team for the Fijian tournament, this Friday and Saturday, may not be the same as the squad that will compete at the Canberra Sevens and Hong Kong Sevens.

Meanwhile, in local action, Valley and Club disposed of each other's second-string sides and took their places on opposite sides of the draw for the Hong Kong Schroders Knockout Cup tournament.

League champions and favourites Valley beat Club's second team, Dragons, 65-12 at Happy Valley to reach the semi-finals against Kowloon, who beat British Forces 43-14.

They were followed on to the dusty pitch by Club, who romped to a 61-5 victory over Valley's second side, the Knights.

For Club skipper John Clarke, the tournament is the last chance for his team to win a major title, after he had hoped for the kind of success they enjoyed last season.

His team now plays Police, who beat Kowloon Lions 45-18.
