An alternative form of cosmetic weight loss, named Vaser Liposelection, has been launched on the market. Vaser stands for vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance. Vaser Liposelection differs from regular liposuction in that it uses ultrasonic energy to selectively break up fat for easy removal.

Hong Kong-based plastic surgeon Cheng Ming Shiaw, who uses this technology, explains: 'The liposelection procedure uses a special probe placed through a tiny incision to directly deliver ultrasound energy to effectively liquefy fat cells, leaving other structures - blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues - largely undisturbed. We are then able to thoroughly remove the liquefied fat in a gentle, non-traumatic way and achieve a smoother contour.'

Liposelection works on delicate parts of the body previously considered risky because of close proximity to the skin surface, such as the chin, ankles, inner thighs and cheeks. The procedure is said to cause minimal bruising and swelling. Possible complications involve the risk of minor skin burns, but these are usually superficial and heal without leaving scars.

Procedures are done in clinics, so patients can go home the same day and generally return to work within a few days.
