So, you thought a clean shave was a simple matter of soap, razor and action? While some men may carry on happily with that routine, others are opting for a smoother, soothing shave thanks to the increasing range of products designed specifically for the act.

Elemis Ice-Cool Foaming Shave Gel (HK$430) is said to soften facial hair and protect the skin against irritation and razor burn, thanks to ingredients which include Chinese date, English oak and witch hazel. Ole Henriksen Clean Shave (HK$260) is a light foaming gel formula containing aloe, cucumber, chamomile and eucalyptus. Said to be a softening and moisturising formula, it's recommended for those prone to razor bumps and irritations. Male brand Zirh has expanded its skin care collection to include Zirh Platinum, a range of eight luxe products made with cosmeceutical formulas and botanicals considered to have protective qualities. Their skin care range was designed 'to be the pinnacle of men's skin care ... for men who are highly selective and discerning about their skin care'. The product range includes R2 R-Evolution (HK$600), a post-shave healing balm said to de-clog pores and reduce redness and irritation. Decleor's Men Essentials range consists of five products, including Aromessence Triple Action Shave Perfector Serum (HK$680) and Smooth Shave Foam (HK$260). In the former, eucalyptus essential oil and jojoba oil act as hair softeners, while sweet almond oil, rose rubiginosa oil and the essential oil of clove aim to ease razor burn. Similarly, their Smooth Shave Foam contains a mix of essential oils and extracts designed to provide a smooth shave. They include frankincense extract and aloe vera gel for their soothing properties, peppermint essential oil to refresh the skin, and clove and eucalyptus essential oils said to minimise excess sebum.
