Photographer flies two million miles to find the perfect shot
Andrew Macpherson just can't seem to avoid celebrities. The English photographer arrived in town on Monday morning and in the lobby of his hotel he ran into rapper Andre 3000 from Outkast.
'I shot him before and we share friends in common. It was like, 'Andre?' and he said, 'Yeah!'' Macpherson recalled. 'I was completely surprised. He's here manufacturing his fashion line.'
Since moving to Hollywood in the mid-1990s, the former fashion photographer found himself in and around the world of stars and celebrities. Many of them, including George Clooney, Muhammad Ali and Charlize Theron, he has captured in a book called Two Million Miles, which is now a photo exhibit on - appropriately - Hollywood Road's Cat Street Gallery (until Monday).
'I did fashion for 10 years, and all of the designers wanted their clothes on actresses and every model was in love with some actor.
'Working with celebrities, though, you never know what kind of images you're going to get. You have some great ones and not-so-great ones. That's the exciting thing.
'You always have to be flexible. It's kind of like going dancing but not knowing what your partner dances,' he said.
As for the exhibition name, the globetrotting Macpherson explained: 'It took me about seven years to make the book happen.
'My working title was Two Million Miles because that's how many frequent-flyer miles I had collected. It's now up to 4 million.'
Macpherson's mother died of cancer, and so he is giving a percentage of the exhibition sales to the Hong Kong Cancer Fund.
