Cococabana - Savour Mediterranean treats in Deep Water Bay
Island Road, Deep Water Bay Beach, 2812 2226
FARE French-inspired Mediterranean. AMBIENCE Relaxed and intimate, with the open front offering expansive sea views. The all-white walls, tablecloths and cushions add a touch of elegance, while fans lift the sea breeze and keep diners cool even on sultry evenings. COST Starters HK$120 to HK$200, mains about HK$300, desserts HK$80 to HK$180. HK$398 for starter, main and dessert. WHO TO BRING Your beloved - it's surely one of Hong Kong's most romantic restaurants - or book the whole place out for a party. TURN-ONS The freshly baked bread was a touch of heaven and set the stage for the rest of the meal. The Irish rock oysters with shallot vinegar were full-bodied and creamy, with the vinegar adding a touch of malty sharpness, and the oven-baked goat's cheese with bacon and basil was toe-curlingly indulgent, the sharpness of the cheese cut by the smokiness of the bacon. The grilled salmon in Moroccan spices with herbs and sour cream was a tantalising mix of flavour sensations and the rosemary and lemon grilled leg of rabbit was soft, succulent and delicate. The cheese platter was a welcome item on the dessert menu. TURN-OFFS The pastry in the summer cherries confit with crispy pastry and vanilla ice cream was dry and more hard than crispy. While the restaurant is run by a chef trained at Michelin three-starred restaurant Le Petit Nice, the serving staff, while perfectly adequate, were clearly not trained to the same exacting standards. Located on top of the Deep Water Bay beach's public changing rooms, the restaurant shares the same ablution facilities. DRINKS A decent selection of red, white and a rose wine at reasonable prices.
