Tickets to electronic music godfathers Kraftwerk on sale next week

It's probably the oddest oldies concert of the year. Promoter Live Nation has booked reclusive German synth outfit Kraftwerk for December 5 at the AsiaWorld-Arena. For those of you too young to recall techno even as a dance genre, Kraftwerk began in the 1970s as an experimental band generating computer music. Their best known hits were Autobahn and Tour de France, although pop singles were never their forte.

Plus, the German oddballs known for their sterile, experimental 'blip bop' are dedicated recluses who rarely give interviews and sometimes used mannequins and robots for photo shoots. In fact, Coldplay's Chris Martin once recalled trying to contact the band at its Kling Klang Studio, a tiny office in the middle of a red-light district in Dusseldorf, to clear a sample for Computer Love. But they did not take visitors and made it known that their studio telephone's ringer is turned off. Instead, Martin had to send them a letter through lawyers and weeks later he simply received a hand-written reply that said, 'Yes'.

Apparently, this year, the four members have put together a curious multimedia show with an animation and digital spectacle. We'll see if they will be performing on stage, or animatronic robots programmed from Germany. Either way, it should be fascinating - a once-in-a-lifetime show for the city's audiences. Tickets, all priced at HK$680, will go on sale next Thursday at the usual HK Ticketing outlets.
