New kid on the block is full of praise for colleagues
As the only undersecretary who has worked for two ministers, Greg So Kam-leung said the two bosses had contrasting managerial styles because of their differing backgrounds.
The undersecretary for commerce and economic development was recruited in June under Frederick Ma Si-hang, who quit because of health problems a month later, and was succeeded by veteran civil servant Rita Lau Ng Wai-lan.
'Mrs Lau has served the government for many years and has valuable experience in operations that were very detailed,' he said. 'Mr Ma, who came from the business sector, obviously had a business perspective on matters.'
Mr So, a former vice-chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, said he had encountered few problems in communicating with lawmakers.
'I met Wong Yuk-man [of the League of Social Democrats] in the Legislative Council meeting [last week]. Everything was fine and we discussed policies and issues,' he said.
Mr So, one of the eight undersecretaries recruited this summer, said he would meet the public more often to hear their opinions on government initiatives. He would also attend a town hall meeting to hear people's opinions during consultation on the obscenity regulations later this month. Mr So said he was impressed by the competence of his fellow civil servants.
'Their qualities exceeded my expectations. I am not shoe-shining. They often work hard until 9pm.'
