Ancillary fund-raisers in this pink month of breast-cancer awareness include six Hong Kong-based mums who will walk the New York marathon. Anneli Nowroz, Beth Graham, Caroline Killeen, Jenni Hounslow, Nicky Crossley and Megan Porter are doing it as part of Walk The Walk, a charity organisation to benefit cancer research.

The group will be flying off today for the 42km serious walk on Sunday. 'The physical preparation is done. Now I just have to pack,' Porter (pictured) said.

'The first walk was in 1996, and one of Beth's friends, Nina Barough, is one of the founders.'

The group began as just gal pals who regularly hike up The Peak's Morning Trail for coffee. 'You know what mums are like now. We send the kids off to school and do our thing. This is an extension of what we regularly do already.

'We've been seriously training since June, and our target is to walk the marathon in six hours.'

Porter though has a personal connection to this cause. Her mother died last August, and breast cancer was her primary illness ('I am doing this in memory of her. She'll be with me every step of the way.')

However, who knows what Mum might think of their walking attire. To pace around New York in decorative, coloured bra tops should be quite attention grabbing.

'They will be stars-and-stripes bras. Walk The Walk's signature is participating in a decorated sports bra. We're all around 40 now. Twenty years ago, we probably wouldn't be confident enough to walk around New York this way. More worrying is the temperature. It will be cold, maybe 11 or 12 degrees.'
