Guangdong residents may get electronic entry permits

Guangdong residents would be allowed to enter Hong Kong with electronic permits to ease the flow of people between the province and the city under a proposal by a policy think-tank.

Zhu Wenhui, senior research fellow of the Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre, said allowing Guangdong residents to pass through immigration checkpoints with electronic permits was convenient and environmentally friendly. He said the measure should be extended to the rest of the country.

Guangdong residents must apply for permits to travel to Hong Kong under the individual traveller scheme.

A survey carried out in Pearl River Delta cities in April found that about half the 1,000 respondents thought the procedure for processing applications for travel permits to Hong Kong was cumbersome. In August last year, the centre put forward a 10-point plan for a Hong Kong-Shenzhen metropolis, which included creating a multiple-entry electronic smart card for Shenzhen permanent residents to enter Hong Kong.
