Mazda Motor Corporation began life as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co, and formally adopted the Mazda name in 1984. After encountering financial problems, Mazda embarked on a relationship with the Ford Motor Company, which took a seven per cent stake in 1979, rising to 33.3 per cent by 1996. However, under the leadership of Ford CEO Alan Mulally, Ford divested its stake in Mazda, and cut production and development ties.
Heath to qualify
IN-FORM Martin Heath, winner of the Mazda squash Championship last week, has been relegated to the qualifying rounds of the Perrier-Asia Inc. Classic which starts today at the Kowloon Cricket Club.
Heath, ranked 100th in the world, is the top seed in the qualifiers following the late entry of Italy's Jose Facchini, the world number 79.
''I checked with the Professional Squash Association half an hour before entries closed and I was still in the main draw but I received notice just before I came to Hong Kong that there was a late entry and I have to play qualifiers,'' said the Scot.
''It's going to be tough but I've been playing well and my win last week has boosted my confidence to do well.'' Heath faces Argentina's Maximo Sacca in the first round.
