Government rejects US criticism

The government last night dismissed criticism by a US body that Beijing blocked universal suffrage. The Congressional-Executive Commission on China said the National People's Congress decision - that the earliest the city could elect the chief executive and all of the Legislative Council would be 2017 and 2020 respectively - was not in line with public aspirations. The government said the report was inaccurate, saying the decision was supported by the people.
