Despite the financial crisis, more than 1,500 Hongkongers took the time to join Citi's third Global Community Day on Saturday.

Global Community Day mobilised more than 46,000 volunteers at more than 1,000 events in over 550 cities in 100 countries.

Hong Kong Citi employees and their friends and family were involved in 21 community activities to help the environment and the underprivileged.

Citi country officer for Hong Kong Zhang Shengman, who helped in a clean-up of Island House in Tai Po, said the number of volunteer activities and NGO partners was increasing by the year.

Ajay Banga, chief executive officer for Asia Pacific at Citi, said he visited underprivileged pre-school children at Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Shiu Wong Lee Moon Fook Nursery School and played games and made kites with them.

'We volunteered side by side and increased the financial literacy of children and adults from low-income communities,' he said.
