Stars roll into the station for mall's festive bonanza

It's the most wonderful time of the year. But forget joy and peace and all that stuff. From a retailer's viewpoint, Christmas is a bonanza for the bottom line. That's why, each year, the major malls go all out to attract shoppers.

The onslaught of kitsch jingles and bells started on Thursday with Harbour City engineering a train at their Star Ferry entrance - described as a 'Middle-Age train station'. We're not sure there were any medieval railways, so they probably mean an industrial-revolution-era steamer. The requisite stars at the event were (from left) director Andrew Lau Wai-keung, singer Denise Ho Wan-sze and actor Andy Lau Tak-wah, all trying to counter the recession gloom.

'This used to be the only place I knew to meet up with friends and back then they had those luxurious car shows here,' Andy Lau said. 'Back then, I always wondered when I could afford a nice car and eventually I could.'

For the ever-scurrilous tabloids, though, the biggest story involved a rumour that the famously boyish singer Ho might show up in a dress. Alas, she didn't. 'I had no idea why they suggested that,' Ho said. 'I think technically you can say [this coat] is a dress. Unless I have no choice whatsoever, like when I attended [fellow singer] Edmond Leung Hon-man's wedding, I would never wear a dress.'

Now you know what to cross off her gift list.
