Sport Hurdles

Achievements Chik-lai, 18, is the Hong Kong junior record holder in the 110-metre hurdles with a time of 14.68 seconds.

This has been a good year for Chik-lai. He won the 110m hurdles events at the Hong Kong Junior Age Group Athletic Meet 2008 (Race 2) and the fourth and final rounds of this year's Hong Kong Athletic League.

Soundbite 'Like other teenagers, I started playing ball games in secondary school,' said Chik-lai.

'I first tried the hurdles about three years ago and immediately fell in love with the sport. So I joined a summer course that year.

'I really like it because it requires speed as well as skill. You have to run fast and jump at the right moment. It's very challenging.

'Finishing a race without knocking down any hurdles gives me a great sense of satisfaction.

'I'm really happy with my performance this year. I can see my efforts have paid off. My target this year was to break the Hong Kong junior record.

'I did that at the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association International Invitation Meet last month. And I set a new mark again this month in the final round of this year's Hong Kong Athletic League.

'I never thought I would be able to break the record twice within a month. I will be taking the A-Levels next year. I hope to pick up my training and return in top condition after the exams.'

From his coach 'I realised Chik-lai had a lot of potential when he first joined my course,' said coach Lam On-tat.

'He is tall, and he trusts me and follows my instructions. We are a good team. There's still room for improvement and I hope he can qualify for next year's East Asian Games.'

Ambitions 'I hope I can break the Hong Kong record and represent Hong Kong at next year's East Asian Games,' said Chik-lai.
