Desperately seeking skilled orang-utan - Bollywood's calling
We're almost afraid to learn more details about this film. An e-mail was forwarded to us regarding the planned shooting here early next year of a Bollywood film. It was looking for animal wranglers in the city, specifically with trained orang-utans. 'We are looking at the possibility of finding an orang-utan to shoot with,' it said. 'We have already inquired with the Hong Kong Zoo and they do not lend orang-utans for film.'
No kidding. I'm sure a few local animal welfare groups would have issues too if such endangered primates were being kept and trained to perform for the camera. You don't have to be Steve Irwin to know an overpopulated concrete city might not be the best place for a rainforest animal used to living in isolation.
Anyway, the movie has planned some scenes with the animal in Hong Kong urban locations. In case no orang-utan can be found here, the e-mail asks for advice on where one could be imported from. 'Is there any other place in China we can engage these animals and trainers and fly them to Hong Kong?'
We are assuming the role has no lines, unless they expect to find Dr Zaius from Planet of the Apes. If you know of a jobless skilled monkey here, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
