Chaos leaves thousands stranded in HK

Thousands of passengers were stranded in Hong Kong yesterday as a result of the closure of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi international airport.

All 26 direct flights to and from Bangkok yesterday were cancelled, the Airport Authority said. If the situation continued, 38 flights to and from the Thai capital would be cancelled today.

Twenty-five tour groups, with an estimated 400 to 500 travellers, were in Thailand, said Joseph Tung Yao-chung, executive director of the Travel Industry Council.

Wing On Travel said eight tours would be cancelled, while Hong Thai would cancel five tours today. The government said Hong Kong people should avoid unnecessary travel to Bangkok.

A spokesman for the Security Bureau said Hongkongers could call the department's 24-hour hotline (852) 1868 or China's embassy in Thailand on (66) 818214771 or (66) 819840658 for help.
