Call for bigger subsidies
The Hospital Authority should increase subsidies to encourage more public patients to have cataract operations in the private sector, Association of Private Eye Doctors president Chow Pak-chin said. In February the government gave HK$40 million to the HA to launch the public-private programme to clear backlogs. Patients waiting for more than three years receive a HK$5,000 subsidy to help them get operations in the private sector. So far 3,442 public patients have joined up, one-third of the total number of patients invited, but Dr Chow said the rate was too low.
