Green taxis

Chan Yat-wun, who has driven green taxis for 16 years, said: 'All green taxis will disappear in Hong Kong if the government refuses to withdraw the new fare system for red taxis. There is no room for green taxis to survive now because all passengers will opt for red cabbies, even going to places in the New Territories.

'No green taxis will wait for passengers at the airport or the checkpoints such as Lok Ma Chau as most passengers will just take red taxis.

'Business dropped by about 50 per cent on the first day of the new fare system. We feel desperate. We can only take passengers who go to Disneyland from the airport as the fare is more or less the same for red and green taxis.

'I used to be able to do four trips from the airport to places in the New Territories. But today up until now ... nearly 4pm ... I have only managed to do one trip to Disneyland.

'We really do not want to cause inconvenience to the public. But we did inform the police, the Airport Authority and the Transport Department, and even the media, to inform the public.'
