The internet can be used to learn about Galileo, Van Gogh, Mozart, global warming, Buddhism and how to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Yet none of these is remotely close to being among the top 10 searches conducted on Yahoo this year. Barack Obama is the only serious topic in the top 10. Even so, the next president of the United States was beaten out of the top spots by Britney Spears (No 1) and World Wrestling Entertainment (No 2). From then on it's downhill all the way, with Lindsay Lohan and American Idol competing with Miley Cyrus, Angelina Jolie, RuneScape (a computer game), Naruto (a manga comic and computer game) and Jessica Alba for the remaining spots.
So it seems the internet is largely used to see whether Britney's gone crazy again or if Lindsay is back in rehab. No wonder the planet is choking on pollution and its financial system has almost collapsed; the unimportant has taken over our minds. A good New Year's resolution could be for people to type 'knowledge' rather than 'trivia' into their search engine. Who knows what they might find?
