Horizons exhibit tests boundaries of sex and smut

To some, obscenity is a crocodile skin handbag costing more than a 12-hour-a-day cleaner's entire year's pay. To others, it's indecent to eat foie gras from a force-fed goose with a side of young veal ripped from its mother's side.

For the Obscene Articles Tribunal, Michelangelo's David statue was once deemed not suitable for public viewing.

As politicians consider redefining the Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance, gay and lesbian group Horizons thinks it's time to examine the boundaries of sex and smut with a daring exhibit called Sexpression tonight at Studio 8 in Chai Wan. All the art, including Lin Zhi-peng's picture Kiss (pictured), will also be auctioned off for Horizons.

'It's important in that there's a lot of political things going on and we felt we needed to address these issues through art and culture, and do it in a fun way,' co-organiser Reggie Ho explained.

'Not everything, nor everyone involved, is gay, but we wanted to express the theme of sexuality.'

Although none of the works are particularly graphic or explicit, some by its 18 artists are audacious in their politics - which for some people is more dangerous than a picture of genitals.

'We're not here to shock. Some of the works are daring, but they are also very good art. I mean, a fashion label hosted a Terry Richardson photography exhibit in Central recently showing people's anuses and penises - not that there's anything wrong with that. We're more about exploring the theme of people's sexual orientation.'

Studio 8 is at Room 802, Block B, 26 Le Chung Street in the Hong Kong (Chai Wan) Industrial Building.

The auction for Horizons starts at 7pm. Call 9867 8283.
