Scot too hot for foe from England

IN-FORM Scotsman Martin Heath extended his winning streak in Hong Kong to seven matches by brushing aside England's Dominic Preece in the opening round of the Perrier-Asia Inc Classic at the Kowloon Cricket Club last night.

Heath, ranked 100th on the Professional Squash Association chart and 25 places behind Preece, was hardly troubled as he swept to a 15-6, 15-6, 15-8 victory.

''I'm hitting the ball better with every match but the competition is very strong and no match can be taken lightly,'' said the 21-year-old winner of last week's Mazda Championships at the Hong Kong Cricket Club.

The Scot's opponent in the quarter-final round is fellow-qualifier Fredrik Almovist of Sweden, who crushed fourth-seeded local player Andrew Shum Siu-chung 15-11, 15-12, 15-8.

Another Swedish qualifier Anders Thoren beat Nathan Gallagher of Australia 15-5, 12-15, 15-11, 15-9.

Top-seeded New Zealander Glen Wilson, ranked 35th in the world, made amends for his first-round defeat in last week's satellite with a straight games triumph over Australian qualifier John Goodchild.

Wilson had to dig deep before stopping Goodchild, losing finalist at the HKCC event, 15-13, 17-15, 15-11.

But Wilson's fellow-countrymen Daniel Sharplin and Wayne Werder lost tamely to Pakistan's Farhan Samiullah and England's Angus Kirkland.

The other quarter-final places went to Australians Simon Baker and Byron Davis.
